Rock Milling in Kyle, TX

Rock Milling · Kyle, TX

Turn the rock on your land into caliche base

Heavy rock on a lot gets in the way of a lawn or a driveway. Rock milling grinds that loose rock into a base you can use, right where it lies. The mill turns surface rock into 3/4 minus caliche. Rocks up to 12 to 14 inches in diameter go through it.

The rock you already have becomes the material, which saves hauling rock out and base in. Intex Rock and Cedar Solutions mills rock for homeowners and landowners across Hays County and the Hill Country. Rock milling is one part of land clearing in Kyle and the towns around it. One job can pair it with cedar clearing.

How rock milling and rock crushing work

Big rock comes first. Boulders and thick ledge rock get broken up with a hydraulic hammer on the skid steer. That rock breaking cuts them down to pieces the mill can take.

Then the grinding starts. Rock milling runs on a high horsepower, high flow tractor with the mill mounted on it. Rock crushing is the same job done with a skid steer rock crusher.

What comes out of the mill is 3/4 minus caliche, a fine crushed base. The state highway department's base guide prefers crushed material, since angular pieces lock together. The milled ground can then be leveled for a yard or shaped into a road.

Why is Hill Country ground so rocky?

Hays County sits where the Edwards Plateau meets the Blackland Prairie, and the Balcones Escarpment splits it. Hilly ranch country covers the northwest three quarters of the county. Grassy farm plains cover the southeast.

On the hilly side, the soil runs thin over limestone. Federal soil surveys list Comfort soils there, only 10 to 20 inches deep to hard limestone. Limestone cobbles and stones are mixed right into the top layer.

Dripping Springs and Wimberley are on that hilly side, and so is Driftwood, northwest of Kyle. Next door, Blanco County sits on the eastern edge of the plateau, with stony clay loams and rock outcrops. Cedar (Ashe juniper) grows on the same stony ground, so one job can take on cedar and rock together.

From rocky ground to a lawn or a caliche driveway

For a yard, the mill grinds the rock down and the yard gets leveled for turf. Topsoil and sod can then go down on a smooth bed. A rocky garden plot can be milled into ground you can till.

On acreage, rock removal by milling turns a rocky field or pasture into usable ground. We take on single backyards and whole fields, and trails through rocky acreage can be milled too. On commercial and development jobs, milled rock can become the base under pads and roads.

For a driveway or a ranch road, the milled rock often becomes the road base. A boulder-filled drive can be cleared and leveled, with the rock ground into road base. Cutting and grading the road is part of our site work on ranch roads and driveways.

FAQ

Rock Milling Questions, Answered

Common questions about rock milling around Kyle and the Texas Hill Country. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (737) 317-7625

Is rock milling the same as rock crushing?
It is the same job on two machines. The tractor runs the rock mill, and the skid steer runs the rock crusher. Both grind loose rock in place into a fine crushed base. People use either name for the work.
Can you mill ledge rock and boulders?
Yes. Boulders and thick ledge get broken with the hydraulic hammer first. The pieces then go through the mill, which takes rocks up to 12 to 14 inches in diameter.
How much does rock milling cost?
The ground sets the price. Acreage and rock density come first, and ledge or big boulders add hammer time. We look at the ground and put the price in a free written quote. Call or text (737) 317-7625 to set it up.
Can grass grow on milled ground?
Yes, once soil goes on top. The state extension service's turf guide prefers 10 to 12 inches of soil and says to remove stones before planting. Where the native soil is thin, it says to bring in good topsoil. Milling grinds the surface stones down, and the ground gets leveled for that topsoil.
Do I need to haul in road base for a caliche driveway?
Often not. The milled rock on your land can become the road base for the drive. When the drive also needs a culvert or new grading, we quote that work too.
What should I check before rock milling?
Utilities mark their lines after a Texas 811 request, made at least two business days before digging. Point out lines you own, like a well line or septic lines, since utilities may not mark those. Parts of Hays County sit on the Edwards Aquifer recharge or contributing zone. State rules there can cover work that disturbs soil, and the state's map viewer shows where a lot sits.

Outstanding job by Trey with Intex Rock & Cedar Solutions! My wife and I were in need of a spot cleared for our future home and Trey exceeded our expectations. He also helped us with removing some old existing piers and leaving the ground nice and level. Highly recommend!

We recently had them out for a major project involving cedar clearing and rock crushing, and the results are incredible. They didn't just clear the land; they transformed the terrain. Their rock milling and crushing equipment turned rough, unusable limestone into a smooth, walkable surface.
