Land Clearing, Rock Milling and Forestry Mulching in Buda

Buda sits where the Hill Country meets the prairie, in northeastern Hays County. West of town, the soil survey maps rubbly ground over limestone, and cedar (Ashe juniper) grows with the live oaks. East of I-35, the survey maps deep prairie clay instead. New homes keep spreading west, and the city's tree rules reach past the city limits into the ETJ.

Intex Rock and Cedar Solutions is a land clearing company based in Kyle, the next town south on I-35. Buda is part of our service area. Our land clearing in Buda takes cedar and rock off lots, pastures, homesites and fence lines. Call or text (737) 317-7625 for a free estimate in writing.

How land clearing in Buda changes from west to east

Out along RM 967, the soil survey maps mostly a rubbly mix of Rumple and Comfort soils. Comfort soils sit just 10 to 20 inches over hard limestone, and Rumple soils 20 to 40. On that ground, a cleared lot is still a rocky lot.

That is where rock milling earns its keep. The tractor-mounted mill grinds loose rock up to 12 to 14 inches across into 3/4 minus caliche. Boulders and ledge get the hydraulic hammer first. The milled ground can become a lawn, a pad, a pasture or a road without hauling rock out.

East of I-35, the survey maps deep prairie clays, mostly Heiden and Houston Black. In a normal year, Heiden clay has open cracks for 90 to 150 days in all. Houston Black takes in water fast when it is dry and cracked, then very slowly once wet.

What Buda's tree code says about cedar and oaks

Buda became a Tree City USA community in 2019. Its development code protects larger trees in the city limits and the ETJ. A Protected Tree measures 8 to 20 caliper inches. A Signature Tree runs 20 to 30, and a Heritage Tree 30 or more.

Removing one of those trees takes a Tree Removal Permit. The Development Services Director rules on a Protected Tree. A Heritage Tree needs a City Council vote after a public hearing. Cutting one without a permit brings a fine of three times the cost of replacement trees.

Cedar is a different case. The code's exempted trees include Common Ashe Juniper, along with mesquite and hackberry. So cedar clearing on Buda lots starts with the oaks. You pick the ones that stay, and we clear the cedar around them.

Is your Buda land on the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone?

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) keeps the official Edwards Aquifer maps. They put much of the land along RM 967, west of town, on the recharge zone. That is where the aquifer's limestone comes to the surface. The state's map viewer shows where a given lot sits.

Buda holds rights to pump city water from that aquifer, and state rules guard the recharge zone. There, clearing that disturbs the soil counts as a regulated activity. That work waits for a state-approved Edwards Aquifer protection plan.

The same rules leave out clearing of vegetation without soil disturbance. Farm and ranch work is left out too, and so is building one house on a lot over five acres. Forestry mulching grinds cedar and brush where they stand and leaves the mulch on the ground. Whether a job needs a plan is TCEQ's call, so ask the agency before work starts.

Site work for a town that doubled in ten years

Buda began as a railroad depot town in 1881 and long served the dairy farms and ranches around it. It had 1,795 people in 1990. The 2020 Census counted 15,108, more than double the 7,295 of 2010. The Census Bureau's estimate for July 1, 2025 is 16,166.

Census survey figures show about 86 percent of Buda homes were built in 2000 or later. The city says new residential developments are underway on its west side. Its list includes The Colony at Cole Springs, plus Persimmon off RM 967. The 2021 bond program includes rebuilding Old Black Colony Road.

Our site work cuts house pads and grades driveways for builders and owners. Where a drive crosses a ditch, we set the culvert. The road base often comes from the property's own milled rock.

I had Intex Rock & Cedar Solutions come out and rock mill about 2 acres of my field, and they did an outstanding job. The difference before and after was incredible. They showed up when they said they would, worked hard, and treated my property like it was their own.

Outstanding job by Trey with Intex Rock & Cedar Solutions! My wife and I were in need of a spot cleared for our future home and Trey exceeded our expectations. He also helped us with removing some old existing piers and leaving the ground nice and level. Highly recommend!

We recently had them out for a major project involving cedar clearing and rock crushing, and the results are incredible. They didn't just clear the land; they transformed the terrain. Their rock milling and crushing equipment turned rough, unusable limestone into a smooth, walkable surface.

Trey and his guys came out with this huge mulcher and made quick work of clearing my 30 acres. They worked long hours, made sure I was happy with everything before leaving, fair pricing, and very easy to work with. Highly recommend!

Trey and Intex did a great job on clearing my property. Up front and honest on pricing. Showed up on time when they said they would. Went above and beyond on the work I asked them to do. Great company.

I had my drive way get washed out during a bad storm and we couldn't get off the property without bottoming out. Trey came out and fixed our road and diverted future run off in the problem area to the ditch and culvert. While he was out he also took the time to clear branches and sticks from the side of the road to open up our drive that was getting over grown.

Buda FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Buda

A few of the questions we hear most around Buda. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (737) 317-7625

Do I need a permit to clear cedar on my Buda property?
Buda's code lists Common Ashe Juniper, the Hill Country cedar, among its exempted trees. Oaks and other trees of 8 caliper inches or more fall under the code. Removing one takes a Tree Removal Permit. The rules reach into the ETJ, so ask Buda's Development Services Department about your parcel first.
What does land clearing cost on a Buda property?
It depends on the land, so we look at it before we price it. Acreage, cedar density, surface rock and ledge, and the trees you keep all move the number. On some Buda land, a permit or a state plan comes first. Call or text (737) 317-7625, and we put a free estimate in writing.
My land is near Onion Creek. What should I check before grading?
Check the flood maps first. Buda requires a Floodplain Development Permit before any grading or fill work in its mapped flood zones. FEMA's Flood Map Service Center shows the maps, and the City Engineer makes the official call. The city's floodplain page shows Onion Creek in flood at RM 967 on October 31, 2013.
How do you work around the oaks on a Buda lot?
Tell us which trees stay, and the cedar comes out around them. The city calls oak wilt one of the most destructive tree diseases in Central Texas. Its code bars trimming protected oaks from February 1 through July 1 unless an arborist does it. Ask about timing when your oaks stand close to the cedar.
Can you grind the rock in a Buda backyard for new grass?
Yes, rock milling works in a backyard as well as on acreage. We grind the loose rock into a fine base and grade it smooth for topsoil and sod. Before new sod goes down, check Buda's drought stage. The city has a variance form for new landscape irrigation.
